Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said its A220 production ramp up, key to achieving profitability on the small single-aisle program, will be closely tied to the launch of the third member of the family, the A220-500. That expectation sets up 2026 — the year Airbus aims to reach its production target rate of 14 A220s per month — as a crucial year for the program, which is still burning cash. The A220-500 is likely to be the last new commercial passenger aircraft variant from either Airbus or Boeing launched for the remainder of the decade.
“We want to get to breakeven before [launch of the -500]. And we want to prove that we are break-even on the program. We want to be close, if not, at rate, when we launch, so we are comfortable with the view that the team can now focus on a new product,” said Faury during a wide ranging interview with The Air Current in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 8.
