United Airlines confirmed it converted 56 Boeing 787-9 orders to the larger 787-10 as U.S. airlines are increasingly constrained on the ground, with scarce gate and air traffic control capacity to accommodate more departures.
The move for United comes as the airline’s fleet is facing near-term pinch points getting parts for the engines on its oldest 777s while it maps out a number of possible transformations for its widebody fleet in the second half of the decade to meet its ambitious growth targets.

A United spokeswoman told The Air Current that it has not yet selected an engine for those 787 deliveries that begin in 2028, as incumbent GE Aerospace and Rolls-Royce continue to fight for a spot under the wing of those aircraft.
