At least five air traffic controllers at the Newark Sector of the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control facility (N90 TRACON) have claimed that recent equipment failures and radar outages have traumatized them to the point of claiming workers’ compensation and now are on paid leave, according to two people directly familiar with the situation.

The Newark sector has been controlled from Philadelphia since July 28, one part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s attempt to remedy decades-old cultural and workplace problems at N90 that have left the key airspace understaffed. As first reported by The Air Current, the sector, which controls traffic in and around Newark Liberty International Airport, experienced a host of radar failures in August that were linked to this relocation — failures that the FAA had known were possible before controllers were moved.
