Japan’s All Nippon Airways placed an order for up to 20 Embraer E190-E2s, occupying a spot in the carrier’s fleet that it once reserved for its defunct homegrown regional jet. ANA was slated to serve as launch customer for Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation’s M90 (formerly MRJ90) regional jet that was felled in May 2020 by an abrupt shift in the manufacturer’s industrial strategy after a dozen years of development. ANA ordered 15 M90s in March 2008.

This order is hugely significant for Embraer, which breaks into another blue chip airline as it seeks to ramp production and build commercial momentum for its E2 family. The addition of the large regional jet starting in fiscal year 2028 adds a new fleet type for ANA, which will fit the roughly 100-seat aircraft between its De Havilland Canada DHC-400s and Boeing 737-800s. Previously Embraer counted JAL and Fuji Dream Airlines as Japanese operators of its first-generation E175 aircraft.
