Battery-electric aviation pioneer Eviation laid off the overwhelming majority of its staff last week, as the company searches for additional funding to continue development of its all-electric nine-seat commuter aircraft, according to two people familiar with the company’s current status.
The significant cutbacks and near-halt to its work signal another aerospace startup that has struggled to bridge the yawning gap between bold concepts embodied in technology demonstrators and a certifiable production aircraft.

Eviation CEO Andre Stein, who declined to comment on specifics, told The Air Current in a statement, “We are proud of what we have accomplished in advancing electric flight, This decision was not made lightly. However, we believe this is a necessary step to focus on identifying the right opportunities.”
He added: “The measure gives the company time to explore strategic opportunities. The company will work with customers, suppliers, and staff to ensure minimal disruption.” Stein as part of his statement thanked employees, suppliers and prospective customers and said the program was not being fully shut down, but offered no further details.
