Spirit Airlines has asked the Trump administration for hundreds of millions of dollars in emergency funding to offset skyrocketing fuel costs and stave off a possible liquidation, sources familiar with the discussions told The Air Current.
Executives from several low-cost carriers are expected to meet with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy early next week, the familiar people told TAC, asking not to be identified as they were discussing confidential matters. One executive familiar with the meeting said it was requested by the Department of Transportation to assess the health of the nation’s smaller carriers. The Association of Value Airlines, which represents Spirit, Frontier Airlines, Allegiant Air, Sun Country and Avelo Air, declined to comment on the meeting.
DOT assistant secretary for public affairs Nate Sizemore declined to comment on whether or not Spirit approached the government. Neither Spirit nor the White House responded to requests for comment.
