The Federal Aviation Administration has cleared Boeing to increase 737 Max production to 42 planes per month, up from a previous cap of 38 per month that had been in place since an improperly installed plug exit broke away from Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 in January 2024.
The removal of the production cap is a major milestone for the plane maker as it has sought to regain the trust of its regulator, customers and the flying public. Boeing closed 2024 targeting an aggressive rebound in 737 production after its industrial reset and 53-day machinists’ strike. Despite springtime challenges within its own factory operations building wings, that acceleration plan to be ready to roll out airplanes at 42 per month by the end of October has gone largely according to its expectation.
