Internal Federal Aviation Administration documents indicate that a planned move of its Washington, D.C.-based staff to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s D.C. headquarters has the potential to negatively “impact NAS safety” (referring to the U.S. national airspace system) and could cost over $250 million to complete.
These considerations around the move, announced alongside a larger DOT reorganization effort dubbed “1DOT,” were outlined in a July leadership briefing document presented to FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford that was reviewed by The Air Current.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy informed DOT employees of his intent to relocate FAA headquarters staff from multiple offices in the Washington metropolitan area to the DOT’s southeast-D.C. HQ building in an Aug. 26 email first reported by Reuters. In it, he decried the operational complexities of separation of the agencies as well as the declining physical state of the FAA’s offices.
