The U.S. Navy has begun its long-anticipated search for a first tranche of Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), seeking two fully-functional prototypes from industry within three years according to a Request for Information (RFI) published Aug. 31.

That rapid schedule for fielding the new generation of teamed aircraft puts the service in line with both the U.S. Air Force and Marines for the first time. The Navy’s effort, like the Air Force, leaves the door open to future, more advanced uncrewed fighter increments as well, but focuses on speed and cost for acquiring its first batch of attritable aircraft.
