U.S. will still attend key ICAO emissions committee meeting

A delegation of employees from the Federal Aviation Administration and other government agencies will attend the annual meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) later this month in Montreal, according to two people familiar with the matter. The decision ends weeks of speculation on whether U.S. officials would attend given the Trump administration’s retreat from U.S. participation in international climate agreements.

ICAO’s CAEP is responsible for setting all Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) related to international aircraft noise and emissions policies. These SARPs, which act as a benchmark for all aircraft being sold to the global aerospace market, are non-binding but widely agreed to by CAEP’s 31 member states. A lack of participation by the U.S. would limit its ability to provide input on standards that many domestic aircraft manufacturers are effectively required to meet in order to sell aircraft to the rest of the world.
