Russian government quietly signaled Ukraine war had forced CR929 withdrawal

Last month, at the 2023 Paris Air Show, The Air Current confirmed that Russia is no longer an equal partner in the Comac-United Aircraft Corporation CR929 project. While Comac had updated its air show presence to indicate that the “Wide-body” was now a Chinese-led effort, the websites of both companies have not changed and neither are offering an official confirmation of the strategic shift.

However, while abstaining from comment, UAC pointed TAC to a December 2022 interview with Tass, Russian state media, in which Denis Manturov, the country’s Minister of Industry and Trade strongly suggested (in Russian, automatic translation follows) that its aerospace industry would be pulling back from the joint project due to the geopolitical realities of the country’s involvement in the program amid its ongoing war in Ukraine.
