GE Aerospace announced a strategic partnership with electric aircraft developer Beta Technologies to develop a hybrid-electric turbogenerator, a vote of confidence in the Vermont-based startup that will come with a $300 million equity investment in the company.
Based on GE Aerospace’s CT7/T700 turboshaft engine family, which powers Sikorsky Black Hawks and other helicopter models, the turbogenerator will find immediate application in the electric vertical take-off and landing variant of Beta’s Alia aircraft, particularly for defense applications. In an interview with The Air Current, Beta CEO Kyle Clark said the turbogenerator will be the “enabling feature” that allows the company to meet the higher range and payload requirements for military cargo and logistics missions, in addition to being suitable for the “near-term larger aircraft” that Beta is exploring as it looks to the future.
