GE Aerospace says it is making progress addressing widebody engine delays that have been a source of tension with Boeing, with shipments of its GEnx-1B turbofans now outpacing the plane maker’s own 787 Dreamliner deliveries to customers.
The world’s largest engine maker delivered more than 50 GEnx engines to the aerospace manufacturer during the quarter that ended Sept. 30, nearly doubling its handover total from a year earlier. Boeing delivered 22 Dreamliners during that period, 19 of which have GE engines, according to the company’s website. More than 30 of the engines are in inventory at Boeing, counting shipsets that are on and off wing, GE executives said during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Tuesday.
“We saw sequential improvement month to month to month. So that puts us in a very good position,” GE CEO Larry Culp told The Air Current in an interview following the call. “But I think we wanted to make sure that that was clear because we know we are outpacing, in our deliveries, Boeing’s deliveries in terms of aircraft to airlines.”
Added Culp: “There’s some other issues. I’m sure you’re well versed in some of the seat certification realities that they’ve talked about publicly and with customers.”
