California court ruling affirms industry consensus approach to unleaded fuel deployment

A California superior court last week ruled that the G100UL unleaded fuel product being developed by General Aviation Modifications Inc (GAMI) lacks the proper demand, availability and industry buy-in to be sold in lieu of high octane leaded aviation gasoline (100LL) at some airports throughout the state, the latest twist in a long-running saga to replace the legacy fuel for piston engine aircraft.

The decision is a setback for fuel developer GAMI’s efforts to distribute its product, but perhaps more importantly provides a strong endorsement of the use of industry consensus standards as the de facto product specification for unleaded fuel approvals over privately developed standards — a legal development that could change how U.S. fuel developers vying to bring their products to market obtain proper approvals by the Congressionally-mandated 2030 deadline to phase out 100LL.
