MHI RJ said for the first time it is prepared to retrofit the North American CRJ regional jet fleet with key traffic situational awareness technology, known as ADS-B “In,” which could soon be mandated for aircraft operating in the United States.
The statement from MHI RJ — owner of the intellectual property and product support for the out-of-production CRJ — comes as the Federal Aviation Administration and Congress weigh significant regulatory and policy changes in the wake of the 2025 Washington, D.C. midair crash between a CRJ 700 and a Black Hawk helicopter that killed 67 people. If an ADS-B In mandate were to force the retirement of the CRJ fleet, “it’s unclear what would replace them,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said this week.
