The Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) that will govern operations of powered-lift aircraft in the U.S. is now undergoing review by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB), putting it on track to be finalized by October of this year.

The SFAR is a critical milestone for the electric vertical take-off and landing industry, as it will enable commercial operations of winged eVTOLs like those being developed by Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation and Beta Technologies. Publication of the final rule will also answer several outstanding questions that are critical to eVTOL developers’ business models, including how much reserve energy these vehicles will be required to carry and whether pilots will be able to train in aircraft that lack dual flight controls.
