The Federal Aviation Administration is postponing the release of its safety continuum for powered-lift aircraft as it works to incorporate what it is learning from ongoing certification projects, leaving open key questions around the extent to which the FAA will harmonize with international regulators including the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
In July 2025, the FAA told The Air Current that it was “working diligently to finalize and publish the policy statement” and anticipated release by the end of the year. The agency now says it expects to release the policy guidance document — which specifies target levels of safety for winged electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft — in mid-2026, two years after initial publication of the document in draft form.
